Penistone Friends of the Earth runs projects to help local people become 'greener'. We also support national campaigns to protect the environment and help us all to be more sustainable.

We meet on the first Monday of every month (except August) at 7.30pm in St Andrews Church, Penistone (next to the library). New members are always welcome, please come along.

Current projects and campaigns
  • Bees

Bees are essential as they pollinate a huge amount of our food crops and yet the numbers of them are falling. This is because we are turning their habitats into roads and houses and because the pesticides used on our farms are harming them. Penistone Friends of the Earth are showing a film about bees and organising the planting of bee-friendly wildflowers.

  • Waste

We joined the campaign being run by National Friends of the Earth which is asking the government to commit to reducing waste by half by 2020 in the waste review which will be published soon. We interviewed local shops to find out how they reduced waste and what the government could do to help them reduce it more. We then wrote a press release with a message about what we had found out and asking David Cameron to 'talk half as much rubbish'. Our media coverage will be collected together along with that of other Friends of the Earth groups around the country and shown to the government to show the strength of feeling about waste.

  • Energy

We have run a project to reduce energy use  and increase renewables in Penistone - through putting energy monitors in the library, increasing awareness in schools, supporting wind farms and are currently investigating sites for a hydro electric turbine.

Sustainability
Penistone Friends of the Earth are working towards a sustainable future. This means changing the way we do things so that we can live well now, and other people can also live well in the future and in other parts of the world.

We don't think we need to 'go back to the stone age' but we do think we need to concentrate more on how well and happy we are feeling rather than how much 'stuff' we have. A sustainable future would not only be better for the other people, plants and animals on the earth, but it would mean less rushing around for us, less stress, more time with our friends and families and doing activities that we really enjoy. We would be healthier and fitter as well. Find out more or come along and join us!
